Business Basics: How Business Cards Are Still Relevant
The world has moved into a digital age, and as such many businesses are taking their campaigns online, relying on the world wide web to do their marketing for them. But if you are relying on the net completely, you are losing potential business. You are also losing the chance to create customer loyalty, and attract that market that exists right outside your front door.
So, what can you do to get to this important customer base? Try doing things the old fashioned way, and relying on face to face marketing to get you the clients you need. Business cards are a traditional and effective way of doing this. People will carry a business card in their wallet for weeks, sometimes months, and when they find themselves in need of a service their minds will often go to that card before anything else. This is an effective means of branding that can really benefit your business, especially as a small of medium sized business that doesn’t have a large budget for advertising.
It is in this way that you will be able to compete with larger companies that often have the dominating business portfolios. You have to play on their weaknesses, and make sure you cover that area in your own business. For a large company, that weakness is the inability to have face time with customers. Instead, the customer loses themselves in a sea of random faces and names, having to rely on shoddy customer service for assistance. Having a business card will immediately put you ahead in this regard.
Making a Business Card Memorable
You have to try to stick out in a person’s mind for more than just what you offer. Giving someone a simple, easy to read business card will go a long way. Try not to offer too much by way of graphics, or use odd fonts. Stick to something that says your name, what you do, and gives a number and perhaps an address. Don’t bother wasting space with slogans, unless it is very short and sweet. If it is more than five words, save it for your other marketing campaign methods.
A simple logo can be beneficial, but nothing that dominates the card. This goes for any graphics that you might choose, as well as colors and fonts. If you have too much distracting from the words on the card, it will draw attention away from what you are offering. They might not think of you in relation to that service, instead relating you to the picture or colors on the card itself.
Carrying Other Business Cards
Did you know that you can get clients by carrying other people’s business cards? It’s true. You can use someone else’s services as a segway into what you do, and what you can offer. Giving someone a recommendation will often lead to a friendly conversation, which will give you an opening into your own spiel.
Not only that, but you can also give your own card and tell them to contact you if you have any questions about the person you have recommended. This is a great way of getting the word out about your own business, which is crucial to business success. Think of it as making a contact through association.
The final reason is that if you pass out someone’s card, they might just do the same for you. This is a great way to start networking with other businesses, and can lead to important and beneficial work relationships in the future. This is especially true of anyone who is in another industry, as they can often end up in your own for some reason in the future.
