Self-Marketing Versus Marketing Companies
David vs Goliath?
When you run a small business you have very few options by way of marketing, at least in the face of the big guys who will inevitably show above you in much brighter lights. Ecommerce has changed this for the better. It is easier and easier for the little guy to stand on his own and get customers who are specifically looking to avoid the larger corporations who are expensive with little substance or reliability.
But with this new freedom to move amongst a once dominated market comes the issue of choice. It is hard enough to figure out just what kind of campaign to use to create some visibility. But what about the issue of whether or not to do it yourself? This is an important issue, and one that many business owners will gloss over over fear of spending extra money for something they feel they can do themselves.
But the debate can be settled easily, and with just a few facts.
Do It Yourself
It’s not as hard as many companies want you to believe, it just takes lots of time and effort to equip yourself with the knowledge and experience you need. If you are wishing to market your business on your own you can do so. But you have to keep in mind the fact that the Internet is literally littered with people trying to make it to the top of the pile. This creates two things: one, is a slight bias towards those that know what they are doing; the second is the more prominent bottom layer of failed attempts by broken wannabe businessmen and women that you can easily get sucked into.
A good rule of thumb to find yourself in the first bracket is by ensuring that you know what you are doing. If you have business or advertising knowledge and experience, you can easily come up with regularly rotating campaigns to bring you to the top of the circulating, overcrowded ecommerce food chain.
Use marketing companies
If you don’t know what you are doing, or you just don’t have the time to dedicate to marketing (this will be a great deal of owners), you will want to stick with an marketing solutions company. This isn’t as frightening as you might think; as small businesses increase, so do groups that are dedicated to meeting the demand for those companies. These are specialists who know how to deal with smaller companies, and who can work on such a budget.
This will give you several advantages. The first is going to be having someone who is experienced and knowledgeable working for you and your business to give you the best possible chance of bringing in a strong, loyal customer base. The second is having more time to focus on the actual running of your company, which is more than a full time job, it is an all consuming one. The third is being able to rely on a changing and fresh campaign and marketing blueprint where you would have likely had your own grow stale.
The rule of thumb is that you have to research the company carefully, ask lots of questions before starting, and always ask them what they are doing and why they are doing it. This helps you keeping track of what they are doing (and whether they are really doing or not) as well as learning some useful knowledge if you want to try doing part of the work on your own later.
Either option when it comes to marketing can be a good one. It will generally depend on your own education, level, and experience when trying to find the choice that fits you and your needs best. Just be honest with what you can take on, and follow that path to the best solution.
